How to Select a Builder

Are we a good fit?

Any successful contractor in any trade as a builder or a subcontractor must build a network. This is for support, logistics, supplies, and even customers.

9 homes enjoys relationships with trade partners all over NC, SC, TN, KY, GA though we primarily focus on the Carolina's. We have been building for 30 years and we know some people who can help.

Consider the source. It is important to recognize where you found this person. If it were a random encounter at a gas pump or the flea market, you may want to adjust expectations.

While we frequent those places too it is worth saying that we work hard every day and maybe everything doesn't go perfectly according to concept, but we are stubborn about staying on a problem until solved. Also, we are members of the National Association of Home Builders and enjoy other professional associations. This keeps us in touch with vendors, trades, both old and new; sometimes unlocking discounts or wisdom. It also provides support and we stay educated on business activities and building codes that may affect your project.

So where did you hear about us? Is a common question that goes both ways. Word of mouth has served us well at 9 homes, also many personal references as individuals within our troop. Just fair that we check you out too. The internet is valuable and constantly evolving—hopefully working to bring us together. Please if you notice an issue with our website let us know. Also, since you love reading reviews please commit to leaving us one at the end of your project.

Community action plays an important role in our company, though as a customer perhaps this is not critical to you. Just know that we support veterans' organizations, The DAV specifically, Habitat for Humanity, Eblen Foundation, and we really enjoy helping people and these great organizations. There is a link on our website for more current information. More than half of us are Veterans and we do our best to take care of each other while taking care of you. A percentage of every profit dollar goes back to the communities we work in.

Word of Mouth. Trust doesn't come cheap. It costs time and work. We are willing to put in the effort and we build lasting relationships. Most people turn to friends and family for recommendations on hiring a contractor. We want to be yours.

Reputation is important to us, we don't leave a mess for you to deal with. We answer the phone and emails, and we care what you think about us as a company. We speak the truth, even if you don't like it, under promise, over deliver, and are consistent and fair in all business dealings. We want your project to be great.

Contracting to build a home is a great honor but the construction industry is highly competitive and wrought with seedy characters. To succeed one needs skills as a craftsman and business savvy.

We are an ethical company. The 9 homes founders worked at some large construction companies for years, where these bad actors fell short and abused the clients. We wanted to build a company that partners with homeowners and delivers a different experience than anyone else.

Here it is in the nutshell, you want a builder who:

  1. Works with you directly and responds to questions and concerns thoroughly.
  2. We want to be your guide through the stressful journey of building your home, most people only do it once, so let’s get it right.
  3. Performs third party inspections.
  4. 9 homes certainly meet these requirements. We have third party vendors that specialize in certifications for LEED, EnergyStar, Healthy Built Home and other certificate programs for sustainability and green building projects.
  5. Has been in business for some time.
  6. Thirty years in business as a builder and extreme remodeler. Our team is comprised of like minded professionals who have worked in every facet of construction, we have built multi-million dollar homes, subdivisions, commercial stores, apartments, condos, and parking garages spanning over 20 years for each manager. Collectively we can boast over 100 years of learning by doing in every role there is.
  7. Insists on transparency.
  8. We really do. There are no games here.
  9. Cares about quality and the materials used.
  10. We want to build a great project and that means not the cheap stuff and no cutting corners.
  11. Has a track record with satisfied clients.
  12. Some of our clients have been friends for over 16 years, it is NOT our desire to build your home and never speak again, we like to check in and make certain things are in good shape many years later.
  13. Hires quality workers, including subcontractors.
  14. There has been volatility in recent years and skilled workers are hard to hold onto. After some really painful lessons 9 homes learned that good people are worth waiting for. We screen workers, and check references. We monitor the trades we use, no fly-by-night business allowed. Vendors must be a certain size and shape because we work all over. No mom-n-pops generally because a trade must be able to field 10-20 workers on multiple jobs minimum for us. Naturally, there are exceptions, and if the homeowner has contacts who they wish to perform work on their home we are willing to have the conversation.
